Your Carpet Experts

It’s that time of year again! Time to break out the dusters, vacuum and cleaning supplies. That yearly spring ritual is upon us. We’ve got carpet spring cleaning tips that will help you get done in no time.

Clean Carpets and Upholstery

Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will need a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear—and for that close inspection by your relaxing guests. When you’re shampooing carpets or cleaning upholstery with a rented carpet cleaner, practice first in an unobtrusive area to make sure you have the knack of the machine and that the treatment won’t discolor fabrics or cause dyes to run. Move furniture just slightly—not out of the room or against the wall, as the old rules dictated—and place the legs of each piece back on top of small wax paper squares after shampooing. The wax paper will protect your carpet and keep the furniture legs from getting wet as the carpet dries. Open the windows to speed the drying process, which can take a day or more. If you’re not the furniture-shifting and machine-renting type, use a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner. Source: RD

Tackle Grimy Carpets

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to lift the gloom from your living space is to devote some love and attention to your soft furnishings. Carpets can look particularly worse for wear after the winter, accumulating months’ worth of dust and dirt, which regular vacuum cleaners can’t quite shift. That’s where a professional steam cleaner can come to the rescue, lifting out old stains and making carpets look much cleaner and refreshed. You can hire these from a variety of places, including major dry cleaning chains or your local hire shop. Some major supermarkets also hire out steam cleaners. They are usually hired out by the day or over a weekend, at variable costs. You’ll also need to buy special detergent to fill the cleaner up with.

Depending on how much of the house you need to cover you’ll need to set aside an appropriate amount of time to tackle this job – it can be quite time-consuming because you need to really go over the carpets and then empty the dirty water every so often. Steam cleaners are much heavier than standard vacuum cleaners, also, so you may need to take a break every so often! If you can, pack the kids off for the day while you tackle this job. Very young children may be scared by the noise and you certainly don’t want dirty feet walking over damp carpets. Ideally you need to allow a bit of time for the dampness to dry off before your carpets are subjected to heavy tread. Source: NetMums

Act Quickly on Rugs

The good news: You don’t have to clean these things every single year. Philip Costikyan of Restoration by Costikyan says you should clean ’em every four or five years — or every 10 years if a rug is not walked on much. Over cleaning contributes to wear and tear. But you can treat stains at home with club soda. Stains caused by pets, coffee, orange soda, red wine, and anything with dye or an acid base are the hardest to remove, and the key is to act quickly.
