Anyone with a new carpet knows the initial excitement of having brand new flooring in your home quickly wears off when you notice all the little fibers that are constantly shedding. While it’s normal for new carpets to shed, there are ways to minimize the amount of fibers that come loose. Follow these tips and you’ll be able to enjoy your beautiful new carpet without worrying about the mess.
Get into the habit of vacuuming
Check your vacuum to be sure it can do the job. You need a vacuum with at least 80 cfm (cubic feet of air per minute) vacuum power. This will help you lift the loose fibers right out of the carpet.
Vacuum the entire room before you replace the furniture. Use slow, methodical movements and make sure that you cover the entire room. As you walk around the room vacuuming, you will notice that more fuzz is coming up off the carpet. Finish the room before going back for a second pass. Source: Hunker
Continue to vacuum on a regular basis. Every day or every other day may be necessary the first couple of weeks. Within a month or two, the shedding should slow down, and within a year, it should cease completely. Source: HomeSteady
Use carpet padding
Measure the carpet’s dimensions and purchase a high-quality carpet padding to place underneath the rug. The padding should be about one inch less in both length and width so that the rug completely covers it. Not only does the padding feel good under your feet or body, but it protects the rug’s fibers from excessive wear and tear as well as dirt and moisture. Placing the rug in a light-traffic area doesn’t really stop it from shedding, although it will receive less wear and tear, so protecting the fibers while using it helps it shed normally.
Cut excess fluff
Trim tufts of wool that emerge above the carpet surface with a sharp pair of scissors. Wool carpets naturally experience this effect — don’t panic — but cutting them even with the surrounding carpet will discourage the fuzzy appearance they cause. Don’t pull the fibers as you work to avoid more shedding. Wipe your hand over the surface to collect loose fibers and balls. Source: HomeGuides.SFGate
