Your Carpet Experts

If you have carpets for your flooring, then you understand that grime, stains, and pet accidents can make it difficult to be cleaned. The reason for this is that the carpet fibers can easily absorb contaminants and moisture, making it a breeding ground for bacteria and other pathogens that cause bad odors.

However, you shouldn’t let this downside turn you away from opting to choose carpets as your flooring. It’s a minor problem that can be easily remedied through natural means. If you want the solution for this, here’s what we recommend!

Natural Ways to Deodorize Your Carpet

Sanitize With Vinegar & Essential Oils

White vinegar and antimicrobial essentials like tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon and others can kill odor causing bacteria. Both ingredients are natural and suitable for sanitizing carpets in homes and make them smell great. To make a freshener with them,

  • You need to mix one part water and one-part white vinegar in a spray bottle.
  • Add 10-15 drops of essential oil of choice to this solution.
  • Spritz this solution on carpets and wait for 20-30 minutes before vacuuming thoroughly.

While using this solution keep rooms well-ventilated and avoid spraying solution in excess. The aim is to mist the carpet with the sanitizer and not saturate it. Make a fresh batch once or twice a month to clean and freshen the carpets, especially the ones in high-traffic areas. Source: Bond Cleaning in Brisbane

Borax or food grade Diatomaceous Earth

This is going to be what is going to help ward off any unwanted critters and visitors. Both are very effective, and both are safe. Just use one or the other and decide what you feel most comfortable using. Borax is non-toxic in small quantities (even sprinkled straight onto a dog bed it’s safe), but food grade DE, obviously is another great choice, especially if you have kids crawling around! Spices and herbs

If you don’t have any essential oils on hand but like the idea of adding some scent to your homemade carpet cleaner, you can mix some dried spices or herbs into the baking soda. Spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg have a pleasant fragrance, or you can try sweet-smelling herbs like rosemary and thyme. Whatever suits your fancy.

Borax

For tough carpet odors, try mixing in equal parts of borax to the baking soda for a homemade carpet odor eliminator (with or without the addition of fragrant oils or spices). Leave the mixture on the carpet for an hour or longer, then vacuum like you would when using plain baking soda. Source: American Home Shield
